This is the first time I tried it this way and I’m never turning back! 🙌🏼

I did it this way for a few reasons:

1. Traditionally the “board” of board and batten would be installed in between the battens. However, I’ve found that I see the best results when I can cover up my nail holes in the hardboard with my battens.

2. From experience, butting up hardboard to door trim, or battens for that matter, takes very exact cuts—that are not only straight, but also free of tear along the edge. While caulk can cover a lot of imperfections, it’s no match for the super smooth finish of hardboard and you can get yourself into trouble!

3. All the boards—the door trim, baseboards, top trim and battens—are the same thickness and I need them to sit flush. Therefore they all need to be installed ON TOP of the hardboard.

In my opinion, this is the most seamless way to install board and batten, and therefore door trim!

PINCH ME 😍 This is not a dream… my garage workspace is coming to life!

The RTA Store cabinets made my laundry space so functional, so were doing it again on the other side of the garage! I’m using the same unfinished ready-to-assemble cabinets, which gives me a ton of flexibility on how I can finish them (#gifted).

Now the big question… WHAT COLOR DO WE PAINT THEM?

If you haven’t heard me say it yet… hardboard is smooth (like butter)! 😉

While hardboard is excellent at transforming textured walls for your board and batten project, I’ve found that it can show imperfections. But don’t worry, they can be avoided!

When installing your hardboard, plan where you’ll be shooting your nails. Believe it or not, nail holes stick out like a sore thumb after the paint has dried on your finished board and batten. Plan to secure your hardboard with nails where you’ll be installing door trim, baseboards or battens! This way, they will be covered after all your boards are installed.

That also brings me to another point…

When I install hardboard, I use a construction adhesive. While a lot of DIYers don’t like using products like liquid nails, it helps secure the board is areas where you’re unable to nail it to the wall. When I install a board and batten project, I’m thinking it’s fairly permanent—or at least going to be up a while—so the idea that the adhesive could damage the drywall, doesn’t bother me.

Not going to lie, I was stumped…😬

Although I’ve done a handful of board and batten projects, I’ve never had this many door ways and corners. Because I was using hardboard to cover up the texture, I had a big decision to make.

One big lesson I learned from Isla’s room is that butting up hardboard to trim does not look as good as when trim and battens are installed over it—especially as a DIYer where our tools are great, but not 100% accurate a free of error.

When I say this hardboard is smooth, I mean that it can shows imperfections—like when hardboard and trim don’t line up perfectly. Unfortunately I know from experience that not even caulk can cover it up!

I’ve found that it looks best—and you face less obstacles—by installing the hardboard and then the trim and battens. There’s just a little workaround for the door trim that I’ll share next.

Don’t get me wrong… the perfectionist in me had a really hard time with this.

Projects are getting done a lot slower around here right now. I guess you could say we’re in our DIYing with toddlers era 🙃

Involving your kids in your projects means you have to slow down. It means more distractions. And maybe saving power tools for nap time.

But it also means spending more time with your kids. Smiling faces. Inquisitive questions. Wheels turning. And lasting memories 🥰

This isn’t to say I never get frustrated. I think that goes without saying with toddlers.

No… the board and batten is NOT going to be brow

No… the board and batten is NOT going to be brown! This is HARDBOARD 🙌🏼

Hardboard is a material, also known as HDF (or high density fiberboard) that I use when I want to cover up the texture of a wall.

So, why do I use hardboard?

Obviously, to cover up texture—because it has a super smooth, uniform surface it is the perfect choice for painting.

But why use hardboard over other materials?

It’s BUDGET FRIENDLY 💸 At around $14 for a 4ft x 8ft panel, you can easily achieve those smooth walls without adding a lot of cost.

It’s DURABLE 💪🏼 You may be familiar with MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, which is actually what I use for the battens and trim in this project. Well, hardboard is HDF, or high-density fiberboard, meaning it’s even harder and more impact-resistant due to its density.

It’s EASY TO WORK WITH 🪚 It’s lightweight and easy to cut—I use my @kregjig rip cut to trim down the different panels.

It’s ECO FRIENDLY 🌎 Made from recycled wood fibers, it’s a great material for the environment.
